The Connecticut Lighter than Air Society Challenge
Our local balloon club here in Connecticut holds a series of 8 to 10 competitions throughout the year for club members in the interest of improving flying skills. We are currently looking for volunteers to measure and score the pilot's competition markers. The competition committee would provide the training and equipment needed.
Usually the competition event is what we call a Hare and Hound. One Balloon is designated the Hare and takes off five minutes before the rest of the competitors. The Hare Balloon flys for a certain amount of time and lands. A large fabric X is laid out. The Hare may drop off a scorer and continue on. Meanwhile the rest of the pilots try to duplicate the flight of the hare and toss a lightly weighted streamer closest to the X. All throws within a certain distance are measured and recorded. The closest throw to the center of the X wins. This is a great way for enthusiasts to get close to balloon activities and learn more about the sport. If you live in or near Connecticut, can get up before dawn and would like to volunteer please contact us.
